Eric's MAME Cabinet

Computer

The computer consists of:
  • AMD Athlon 900 MHz
  • ABIT KT7A motherboard
  • 512 M memory
  • GeForce2 video card
  • 80 gig Seagate harddisk
I built a tiny Linux system based on BusyBox that is loaded as a ramdisk image at startup. It boots very fast and runs AdvanceMENU and xmame. While the root filesystem is in memory, the MAME ROMs and data like high scores are stored on the harddisk. The Seagate harddisk uses fluid dynamic bearings that enable it to be very quiet.

Monitor

The cabinet was designed to fit through 30-inch doors in a home, which means the size of the monitor is limited. I chose a 25-inch TV from Curtis Mathes that accepts S-Video input and does not have speakers on the side. Its dimensions are 21.3 x 24 x 20.8 (HxWxD) and it weighs about 64 pounds.
