Nice Office
Things seem to be going well for Joel and Fog Creek Software. They just moved into new office space, and had the place designed for programmers. Each coder gets their own window office with dual-screen LCD, UPS-powered outlets, and a network switch. The hang-out area reminds me of a dot-com startup … a kitchen, flat-screen HDTV, pool table, and game console. He has pictures with a write-up here.

If I won the lottery and started up my own little software company, I would definitely take my office design inspiration from Joel! With the talent that Joel attracts, I doubt I’d be good enough to empty our their trashbins in that office.
It’s cool to see a company president that just “gets” it when it comes to programmer efficiency. I was at my most efficient when I worked at home and could completely control my environment. Having huge stretches of time where I wasn’t interupted by anything just did amazing things for my productivity. Being able to have a beer at lunch was another nice benefit of working from home! Ha! Ahhh … I miss those ‘ol Internet Boom days …
