Geek Squad Spotted
I just spotted a Geek Squad car on the northern outer belt for a second time. Although their website doesn’t proclaim it on their national map, if you search on ZIP code, they claim to service Columbus. And apparently they’ve had business lately.
Even though tech support is a lousy job, these guys make it fun. First, you get a sweet company Geekmobile. They are completely web-based, so you drive right to your first call in the morning, and straight home after work. You also get a smart phone running a mobile app to access your schedule, process credit cards, and log your time and mileage.
It reminds me of the Black Team at IBM. It was a team of people who could test software just a little bit better than others. So you would expect a modest improvement in bug reports. But they went far beyond that. They became notorious for nasty testing that destroyed code and sent bug reports back to developers. They even started wearing all black to work and laughing horribly when they found bugs. The team had jelled, excelled at their work, and made something as mundane as testing fun all at once.

Since October of 2004 every Best Buy store has been equipt with a Geek Squad Precinct. Each Precinct recieves at least one Volks Wagon. This is for the Double Agent, double meaning that he works in the field and in the precinct. All agent report to headquarters on a regular basis and this is where all credit cards are processed and check and cash returned. The idea is for the Double Agent to stay in the field but when he has not be scheduled many times returns to the Precicnt to do “Follow Home Missions”. These are for Best Buy Customers who do not feel able, or are not physically fit to setup their new computer when they get home. The double agent can follow them home and help them set it up and get them started. He is also aviable for hire for computer training.
There are approxmently 1050 Double Agent who recieve a Company Car, 98% of them are Volks Wagons. There are then approxmently 6200 CIA’s or CounterIntelligence Agents spread thoughout Precincts all across the US.
Hopes this sheds some light are the number of agents we currently have and impact that we have in today’s Technology Industry.
